Downtown Nest

“When we first bought here, there was nothing.”

A once quiet side street quickly turned into a finger-on-the-pulse neighbourhood in downtown Toronto. With parks, cafes and foot traffic on high, we wanted to help our clients carve out a moment of peace.

As avid travellers, they wanted all artificial so they could up and leave at leisure.

The foundation or canvas of their balcony had already been set. Several planters lined the railings in juxtaposing heights. Their patina finish inspired us to work within a subtle colour palette that would blend well and hopefully look even more natural with time.

A grouping of grasses were swept together in a ‘painterly’ fashion… a little white here, a touch more red there. While cedar trees and shrubs, in varying shapes and sizes, were organized to create moments throughout the space, some with more privacy than others.

Our signature finishing touch was to top the plants with cedar nuggets (not chips) to create organic cohesion and as a bonus, they lent a lovely fragrance.

The result of the project was a cool and contemporary balcony redux that would last for years to come.

Ideal and realistic indeed.
